Lord & Schryver Conservancy

Elizabeth Lord and Edith Schryver were the first women in the Pacific Northwest to own and operate their own landscape architecture firm, and designed over 250 landscapes and gardens in the region between 1929 and 1969. The Lord & Schryver Conservancy grew from an increasing awareness in Salem about the work of Lord & Schryver and a concern for the fate of the gardens at "Gaiety Hollow", their home, studio, and the tour de force of their life's work. In 2015, the Lord & Schryver Conservancy acquired Gaiety Hollow and began restoring the garden and opening it to the public.

The mission of the Conservancy is to "preserve, interpret, and steward the legacy of Lord and Schryver for public enrichment." Gaiety Hollow serves the public by providing a space for historic display gardens, educational programs, conserved archival materials, and small event rentals. It is a unique resource for garden design, plant display, and research, and it is a historic site that welcomes visitors in a fascinating and beautiful environment.

Gaiety Hollow is located at 545 Mission Street in Salem, Oregon. The gardens are open on select days or by appointment.

In partnership with the City of Salem, Conservancy volunteers also assist in the restoration and maintenance of the historic gardens at Deepwood Museum & Gardens, which were also designed  by Lord & Schryver.

Conservancy Projects

Restoration of the Garden at Gaiety Hollow
The garden is currently being managed by volunteers and work is underway to restore it to its period of significance.

Cultural Landscape Report
The L&S Conservancy commissioned a two volume Cultural Landscape Report by MIG in Portland in 2009 detailing the history of the Gaeity Hollow site and identifying those extant elements which contributed to the Period of Significance. This comprehensive report serves as the authoritative document to guide the Conservancy in its work to rehabilitate the Gaiety Hollow gardens.

Rehabilitation Report, Historic Deepwood Estate
The Rehabilitation Report is  a 100+ page addendum to the Historic Landscape Report outlining the Conservancy's decade-long project to rehabilitate the historic gardens at Deepwood.

Exhibits
The L&S Conservancy has collaborated on a number of exhibits including one at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art in 2011 and at Bush Barn, Salem Art Association and the Willamette Heritage Center.

Archiving Material
We have developed an extensive archive to supplement that of the professional papers of Lord and Schyrver, housed in the Special Collections at the Knight Library of the University of Oregon. Our archive includes many oral histories, over 1,500 historic images which have been digitized and catalogued into a database, garden identifications and copies of publications on their legacy. The Lord and Schryer Conservancy's archive is located at Gaiety Hollow.

Divas of Design
The L&S Conservancy hosted a day-long symposium at Willamette University in 2009 that featured national speakers with over 80 attendees.

PACE Program
In the fall of 2013 we participated in the PACE program of the Atkinson Graduate School of Management, working with a team of students to develop a marketing and membership program.
